The name Olympian Cultures does not immediately make you think of a non-profit helping others. You may be curious to know why we chose the name to align with our mission and vision. Here’s the why:
Our founders are Greek which created a desire to honor cultural tradition and language in what we do.
In Greek, there is a φιλοξενία (philoxenia) which means to be a friend of the outsiders. This word holds deep meaning to be a person who welcomes all people into your community; foreigners and fellow Greeks alike. Typically, this involved providing shelter and sharing a meal with a glass of wine at no cost.
In English, there is a similar word of hospitality to provide these things usually within a home, hotel, restaurant. However, the Greek φιλοξενία defines this sense of welcoming to be something that occurs anywhere; home, cafe, on the street. Simply put, it means to have an open heart towards strangers at any time.
As a non-profit, we seek to have φιλοξενία be the pillar of who we are. Our desire is to embody the spirit of being a friend to all by providing assistance as best we can to anyone from any background. We serve the community to thrive as family!
